With face-to-face classes back up and running at Gemma Pearce Fitness, you might be thinking of dusting off your trainers and leggings and booking onto one of our Abingdon / Didcot area Zumba or Zumba Gold classes. Or maybe you're wondering what we're changing as social distancing comes to an end?
If it’s been a long time since you visited a fitness class or lockdown has made you nervous about starting something new, here are some answers to the most commonly asked questions about Zumba and Zumba Gold.
1. What is Zumba Gold?
Zumba Gold is a lower impact version of Zumba that is still every bit as fun to do – and just as good for you! If you are new to Zumba or may have trouble keeping up in regular Zumba classes, try a Gold class! It's not slow or boring, it's just less intense. These classes are for older adults or anybody who might be needing a slightly slower pace, less bouncing around and easier to follow choreography. Most of the music is Latin or international rhythms, but there will also be some oldies and music you'll know... and it's not as loud either!
2. I’m unfit, will I keep up?
We all have to start somewhere and there are people at every level of fitness at Zumba and Zumba Gold classes. Go at your own pace and do what feels right for you, you won’t feel pressure to take the high intensity option. Our top tip is to focus on the instructor and the music – enjoy yourself and push as hard as you want to. If you need a break, march on the spot or do your own thing until you’re ready to get back to it.
3. What should I wear?
Wear clothes that allow you to move freely - generally leggings or jogging bottoms and a vest or t-shirt are best. You need to wear trainers with cushioned soles that allow you to twist and turn your feet (you may find that running shoes do not allow you to slide and swivel due their deep tread).
4. Is there an age limit?
All Gemma Pearce Fitness Zumba classes are suitable for 16yrs+. There is no upper age limit, but if you find Zumba a bit tricky, why not join a friendly Zumba Gold class?
5. Do I have to be able to dance?
Previous dance experience is definitely not required! We are determined that everyone gets a fabulous workout, so as long as you’re not afraid to try, you can certainly do Zumba. It’s not a structured dance class, the moves are repeated several times and are designed to be fun and easy to follow.
6. Can I hide at the back?
Yes of course, if you want to! As long as you can see the instructor’s movements and directions when the music is changing. You won’t look silly if you can’t do it – no one cares! Everyone is too focussed on listening to the music, having fun and watching what’s coming next!
7. I have a problem with my knees/hips/back etc. Can I do Zumba?
Each Zumba class will include a wide variety of moves. Before the class, let your instructor know about any problems you have so that they can give you alternative exercises to do. Alternatively, give Zumba Gold a try, it’s much lower impact and slower paced, but still great fun and marvellous exercise.
8. Will Zumba help me lose weight?
Yes! As with any weight loss plan you will need to pair exercise with a commitment to healthy eating to achieve long term weight loss. Many people have lost a considerable amount of weight doing Zumba, and some haven’t lost any weight at all. You can burn 200 - 400 calories doing an hour of Zumba, depending on your height, weight, age and workout intensity level. You get out of it what you put into it!
9. How are classes COVID safe?
Although social distancing ends on Monday, we are still keeping the same reduced capacity for each class for now to keep us all safe. Each participant has a 9m2 (100 sq foot) box to work in. We will continue to have good ventilation; hand sanitiser and we are track and trace compliant.
10. How do I book and how much does it cost?
We are not taking cash on the door at the moment due to the reduced capacity classes so each Zumba and Zumba Gold class must be booked on the website. Each class costs £7 and you can find classes at Long Furlong Community Centre in Abingdon, Sutton Courtenay, Chilton or Steventon.
If you’re not able to make a face-to-face class or you’re still not ready to face a room full of people, we are still running Zumba Gold LIVE online – join our VIP group to join in!
